Purpose:

The concept of Maggie’s was to create an application where the user can experience superb support and connection while undergoing cancer care. Maggie’s Cancer Care has multiple locations throughout the world, and the goal of this project was to create a rebrand of the company, along with designing the application. The way that I structured this design was by creating a core group of friends and family that can be on this app with the patient, along with connecting with the user with other cancer patients via Maggie’s Cancer Care Center. With the Maggie’s application the message is strong and most importantly positive, teaching others to live beyond cancer.

Project role:

As the visual designer, I saw an opportunity for the branding of this application to standout from other leading competitors that focus solely on the medical aspect. The branding for the Maggie’s Cancer Care and application design needed to express liveliness for users to feel a sense of normality in a small part of their daily lives. My process for this project consisted of researching both the current Maggie’s Cancer Care facilities, along with using other cancer care applications.

Software used:

Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.

Competitor Research

 KIDNEY CANCER APPLICATION

I looked at several dozen apps that related with cancer or other serious illnesses. For the Kidney Cancer App, I found the real app and download it and used the interface and took screen shots. I noticed that this interface was very confusing and the information that was displayed was very disorganized and at times seemed overwhelming.  There were some positive aspects within this application, such as the calendar did keep track of chemotherapy dates, and when first logging into the application you have the option to either be a patient or caregiver.

ICANCERHEALTH APPLICATION

iCancerHealth Application was designed well and compared to other applications on the market the information displayed was more organized. However, the logo seemed over the top and had a disconnect with the topic at hand. There seemed to be so many different features that made the application extremely difficult to navigate.

Maggie’s Cancer Care Centers

DESIGN INSPIRATION

The reason why I am showing you the interior and exterior of Maggie’s Cancer Centers is because each facility around the world displays uplifting qualities within the use of color, light, and space. Researching the actual facilities played a key role for the inspiration of the brand design. Each facility at Maggie’s creates a welcoming environment for people by having large open rooms, along with having spaces for both social events and quiet moments. My goal was to translate this beautifully simple design into an application that would provide a positive space for comfort and connection.

Wireframes

Testing and Prototyping

I created both digital and physical wireframes to have a better understanding of the navigation flow for the user. With the physical wireframes I conducted user flow studies where I asked several individuals to test my application and then from there write any comments or concerns that I could possibly improve on. This was helpful during the process because I found out that my bottom navigation was confusing, so still being in the early stages of prototyping I was able to easily alter the design.
